Texas Summers

Texas Heat &
Grid Resilience

Austin summers are long, and our grid has had hard days. The good news: a few simple habits keep your Tesla comfortable and your battery healthy through the heat, and with Powerwall or Cybertruck Powershare you can keep the lights on when the grid cannot.

Beat the Heat

None of this is complicated. These are the habits experienced Austin owners lean on once the temperature climbs.

Keep it plugged in

When you are parked at home, leave your Tesla connected to its charger. A plugged-in car can use wall power, instead of the battery, to keep itself cool, which protects the pack on the hottest days.

Charge to your daily limit

For everyday driving, keep the charge limit in the Daily range (Tesla suggests roughly 80% for most batteries) and only charge to 100% right before a longer trip. This is easier on the battery over time.

Precondition before you drive

Use the Tesla app to cool the cabin a few minutes before you leave. Preconditioning while plugged in pulls from wall power and means you step into a comfortable car without draining range.

Turn on Cabin Overheat Protection

This setting keeps the interior from climbing past a set temperature while parked in the Texas sun, which protects the cabin and anything you leave inside. Find it under Safety in the vehicle settings.

Park in the shade when you can

A covered garage or a shaded spot reduces how hard the car works to stay cool and keeps the cabin closer to a comfortable temperature when you return.

Mind very low and very high charge

Avoid leaving the car sitting at a very low or very high state of charge for long periods in extreme heat. A comfortable middle range is the kindest place to leave the battery.

When the Grid Goes Down

Texas owners learned in 2021 how much resilience matters. Tesla energy products can turn a stressful outage into a manageable one.

Powerwall home backup

Tesla Powerwall stores energy and can keep essential circuits running when the grid goes down. Paired with solar, it can recharge during the day, which is valuable during long Texas outages.

Cybertruck Powershare

Cybertruck can use Powershare to provide power during an outage, including the ability to help back up a properly equipped home. It is the one vehicle in the lineup with this capability today.

Charge ahead of severe weather

When a major storm or heat event is forecast, top up your car (and your Powerwall, if you have one) in advance. Starting an outage with a full battery gives you the most flexibility.

Conserve during an outage

If you are relying on stored energy, run only what you need. Your Tesla and the Tesla app let you monitor usage so you can stretch backup power until the grid returns.

Common Questions

What charge level should I keep my Tesla at during Texas summers?
For daily driving, keep the charge limit in the Daily range, which Tesla suggests is around 80% for most batteries, and charge to 100% only just before a longer trip. Leaving the car plugged in at home also lets it cool itself from wall power on hot days.
Does extreme Texas heat damage a Tesla battery?
Every current Tesla actively manages its battery temperature, so normal summer driving is fine. To be kind to the pack over the long term, keep the car plugged in when parked, use preconditioning, park in shade when you can, and avoid leaving it at a very low or very high charge for long periods in extreme heat.
Should I precondition my Tesla in the summer, not just winter?
Yes. In summer, use the Tesla app to cool the cabin before you drive, and turn on Cabin Overheat Protection so the interior does not climb past a set temperature while parked in the sun. Preconditioning while plugged in uses wall power instead of range.
Can a Tesla power my home during a grid outage?
Tesla Powerwall is designed to back up a home and can recharge from solar during the day. Among the vehicles, Cybertruck offers Powershare, which can help power a properly equipped home during an outage. The other vehicles cannot currently back up a house. Confirm your specific setup with Tesla.
