Tesla
Roadster

The quick answer

Is the new Roadster the same car as the original?

No. The original Roadster was Tesla's first production car, unveiled as a prototype on July 19, 2006, with regular production of the 2008 Roadster beginning March 17, 2008. The next generation Roadster is a separate, new vehicle. Check Tesla's official Roadster page for confirmed details.

A New Car

As of our October 15, 2026 review of Tesla's public Roadster page, Tesla lists Performance by reservation and Thrust and Rocket under Augments. The descriptions below summarize Tesla's claims and have not been independently verified.

Tesla's own caveat

Tesla's Rocket section states: "Not approved for public road use." Do not treat a feature description as permission to use that feature on public roads.

Original versus next generation

Same name, different cars. Buying, service, and parts questions for one do not answer questions about the other.

Next generationA separate, new vehicle. Tesla lists Performance by reservation, plus Thrust and Rocket options.

Published performance

Original (2008)Tesla's 2008 press release quoted 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. That figure applies to the original car only.

Next generationThrough Tesla's official reservation page only. Access varies by trim.

Road use

Original (2008)Was sold as a road car in 2008. Registration today depends on the individual car and Texas rules.

  3. 3Read the current payment table and terms on the reservation page before paying anything.
  4. 4Note which payment Tesla labels refundable and which carries different terms.
  5. 5Put the 10 day payment deadline on your calendar so the reservation is not canceled.
