Global Headquarters
Giga Texas is built on 2,500 acres of land along the Colorado River. According to Tesla, the factory floor spans over 10 million square feet. The campus combines vehicle manufacturing with Tesla's global headquarters.
Tesla identifies Giga Texas as a U.S. manufacturing hub for Model Y, its electric SUV. Austin is part of Tesla's wider production network, so not every Model Y comes from this factory.
Tesla calls Giga Texas the home of Cybertruck. The electric pickup is a defining part of the factory's identity and connects its vehicle production directly to Austin.
The factory decision and the headquarters move were separate milestones. Tesla selected the Austin area for its new factory in July 2020. In October 2021, Elon Musk announced that the company's headquarters would move from Palo Alto to Austin. The location story combines room for manufacturing, access to markets, local incentives, and the ability to expand.
Contemporary reporting described Tesla's search for a factory in the central United States, with Austin and Tulsa among the contenders. The original plans included serving customers in the eastern United States. A Texas factory expanded Tesla's manufacturing footprint beyond California.
The chosen site sits east of Austin along the Colorado River, near Austin's airport. Tesla now describes a 2,500 acre campus. That scale helps explain the site's manufacturing role, though the site's size alone is not a complete explanation of Tesla's decision.
Travis County and the Del Valle school district approved property tax incentives during the 2020 selection process. Those agreements were part of the factory's economic context. They should not be confused with proof that taxes were the only reason Tesla chose Austin.
When explaining the 2021 headquarters move, Musk cited Bay Area housing costs, long commutes, and limits on expansion. He contrasted those constraints with the Austin factory's proximity to the airport and downtown. These were his stated reasons at the time, not a promise about today's housing costs or travel times.

Access and Tours
Giga Texas is an active industrial facility with heavy machinery, continuous logistics traffic, and strict security. It is not an open campus for sightseeing.
Do not assume you can enter the grounds without prior authorization. Follow Tesla's official invitation and access instructions. A map listing or a club membership is not permission to enter.
Tour availability and eligibility can change. Check our dedicated tour guide, and only make plans around a confirmed invitation or reservation. Tesla controls access; the club cannot guarantee a place.
