SpaceX
And Texas

Reusable rockets, a crew spacecraft, a satellite network, and a launch site on the Gulf coast. Here is a plain overview of SpaceX for Austin Tesla owners, with the Texas connections and how to watch a launch safely.

Two Companies

Same Spirit,
Separate Firms

SpaceX and Tesla are distinct businesses. For Tesla enthusiasts interested in engineering, SpaceX offers another way to explore how hardware is designed, tested and reused. Rocket recovery and electric vehicle technology are different subjects, but both reward curiosity about how things work.

This guide is educational. It is not investment advice, and nothing here speaks for either company. When details matter, the official pages linked throughout are the source of truth.

The Fleet

A rocket gets things to orbit. A spacecraft is what rides on top. Keeping those two ideas apart makes the SpaceX lineup much easier to follow.

01

Falcon 9

Reusable two stage rocket

SpaceX describes Falcon 9 as a reusable two stage launch vehicle. The first stage is designed to be recovered and flown again; the rocket as a whole is not fully reusable. It launches satellites and Dragon spacecraft. [SpaceX]

02

Falcon Heavy

Three cores, heavier payloads

Falcon Heavy combines three Falcon cores with 27 Merlin engines in total. SpaceX positions it for heavier payload missions than a single Falcon 9 is meant to carry. [SpaceX]

03

Dragon

Spacecraft for people and cargo

Dragon is a spacecraft, not a rocket. It carries people and cargo, including missions to the International Space Station, and it launched NASA astronauts in 2020. Crew size varies from mission to mission. [SpaceX]

04

Starship

Fully reusable by design

Starship pairs the Starship spacecraft upper stage with the Super Heavy booster, and SpaceX designs the whole system for full reusability. Moon and Mars missions are stated ambitions, not guaranteed outcomes or schedules. [SpaceX]

The Texas Connection

Three Texas Sites

SpaceX lists several Texas locations, each with a very different job. [SpaceX Sites]

  1. South Texas

    Starbase

SpaceX headquarters and the place where Starship is developed, manufactured, tested, and launched. Starbase also became an incorporated city in 2025. Do not assume that a visit to the area includes access to SpaceX facilities. [SpaceX Starbase]

  2. Central Texas

    McGregor

Rocket engine and propulsion testing, including Raptor, Merlin, and Draco engines. It is a working test site, not a visitor attraction. [SpaceX Sites]

  3. Austin area

    Bastrop

Manufacturing for Starlink customer kits, the hardware households and businesses install. Starlink satellites themselves are produced in Redmond, Washington. [SpaceX Sites]

None of these are the Tesla factory. For Tesla's Austin campus, read our Giga Texas guide.

Overhead

Starlink is SpaceX's broadband service, delivered through a network of satellites in low Earth orbit. The customer kits are manufactured in Bastrop, just east of Austin. [Starlink]

Coverage, pricing, and eligibility depend on your plan and your location. Starlink is not automatically part of Tesla Premium Connectivity; they are separate services from separate companies.

Launch Viewing

We do not publish launch dates here, because they change. Schedules shift, missions scrub, and a date copied onto a web page goes stale fast.

FROM ANYWHERE

Use the Official Page

The SpaceX launches page carries current mission pages and official watch links. Check it close to the event, and expect times to move. [SpaceX Launches]

IN SOUTH TEXAS

Check Closure Notices

Cameron County publishes Boca Chica beach and State Highway 4 closure information. Some listings on that page can be old, so check the date of the latest notice and follow current instructions from local authorities. [Cameron County]

Cameron County Notices

Before You Drive South

  • Starbase is in South Texas, a long drive from Austin, and is a separate facility from Tesla Giga Texas.
  • Plan around uncertainty. A launch can move by hours or days, so build flexibility into lodging and time off.
  • There is no public entry to private facilities and no promised tours. Stay out of fenced and posted areas.
  • Obey road and beach closures, private property signs, wildlife protections, and drone restrictions.
  • No viewing spot is guaranteed. Conditions, closures, and access can change without much notice.

Austin Owners

Interested in rockets as well as electric vehicles? Explore the Tesla Owners Club of Austin community and bring your questions to a meetup. Our events calendar lists the gatherings we are hosting; this guide is not an announcement of a SpaceX tour or launch watch party.

Common Questions

Are SpaceX and Tesla the same company?
No. SpaceX and Tesla are separate businesses. Many Tesla owners follow both because of a shared interest in engineering and reuse, but the Tesla Owners Club of Austin is independent and is not endorsed by or affiliated with either company.
What is the difference between Starship and Falcon 9?
Falcon 9 is a reusable two stage rocket whose first stage is recovered and flown again, and it launches satellites and Dragon spacecraft. Starship is a separate system that pairs the Starship upper stage with the Super Heavy booster and is designed for full reusability.
Where does SpaceX operate in Texas?
According to SpaceX, Starbase in South Texas is its headquarters and the Starship development, manufacturing, testing, and launch site. McGregor in Central Texas handles engine and propulsion testing, and Bastrop near Austin manufactures Starlink customer kits.
Can I tour Starbase or other SpaceX sites?
Do not assume public facility access or a tour is available. SpaceX sites are active industrial and test facilities; enter only with explicit authorization. Starbase is in South Texas, far from Austin and separate from Tesla Giga Texas.
How can I watch a SpaceX launch?
Use the official SpaceX launches page for current mission pages and watch links. Launch times change and missions can scrub, so check close to the event. If you travel to South Texas, follow Cameron County closure notices, check the date on the latest notice, and obey local authorities.
Is Starlink part of Tesla Premium Connectivity?
No. Starlink is a SpaceX broadband service delivered by a low Earth orbit satellite network. Coverage, pricing, and eligibility depend on your plan and location, and it is not automatically included with Tesla Premium Connectivity.
