Origin: After closely following Tesla since its inception, Matt Holm ordered his first Model S in 2012 (delivered March 2013). A week later, Tesla invited Austin-based owners to support a transition to direct sales in Texas at the state capitol during the 2013 congressional session. Matt was featured in two news broadcasts and sat in testimony behind Elon Musk. Elon recognized Matt from the news reports and signed his sun visor and license plate. A handful of owners then began advocating for Tesla through Cars and Coffee events and community organizing. By 2015, Tesla offered the club official designation as an enthusiast arm of the brand, and it grew from hundreds to thousands of members. The Tesla Owners Club of Austin officially spun off from the Tesla Owners Club of Central Texas on 4/20/2020.
